This section of the system contains a range of useful settings. This article focuses on the following:

The Consignment Prefix field allows a string of characters to be added to the beginning of each consignment number created manually in the account.
It can be any text of choice and any length required but typically, it is recommended that the prefix value be around 3-6 characters in length and be something related the business name of the account - i.e. for an account titled "Express Cargo Co" the prefix could be "ECC".

To set a prefix, simply double click the field. Doing so presents an editable text area like so:

Enter the prefix as needed and click Save to implement.

Info
By default, the prefix set here applies to all consignments created via the consignment creation page in the portal. Exceptions to this include if a user manually sets a number in the consignment number field or for consignments created via EDI/API methods where the external party dictates the number in the file sent.

FAQs

Q: Why is a prefix important?

Prefixes are important for several reasons, with the primary purpose being to prevent Transvirtual-generated consignment numbers (created via the consignment creation page) from consisting solely of short numeric values.
When a consignment number is generated using only numbers (for example, 645321), there is a significantly higher risk of scan mismatches. This can occur when mobile app users scan freight associated with a different consignment, as purely numeric consignment numbers are more generic and therefore more likely to be incorrectly matched.

Q: Can I set prefixes uniquely for each customer in my account?

Yes. Prefixes can be set at an account level as outlined above, or uniquely on a customer card if that customer requires a consignment number prefix that differs from the rest of your customer base.
